The Vietnamese Student Association at the University of California, Berkeley proudly presents our 2011 Culture Show entitled Echo. This year, we bring you the struggles of three teenagerss in New Orleans East: Viet Ho, his little sister Anh Duong Ho and their cousin Oliver Tran. We meet them at the crossroads of their young lives during the time of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Echo is the ongoing immigrant journey that highlights the pride, difficulty and responsibility of being the next generation of Vietnamese Americans.

Every year, since the establishment of the Vietnamese Student Association at the University of California, Berkeley in 1978, the VSA annual Culture Show brings together students, Vietnamese and non-Vietnamese alike, to produce an integrated theatrical production of music, art, dance, drama, and prose. This integration of creative disciplines is what the VSA Annual Culture Show is best known for and what sets the show apart from the typical “variety show.” Those who participate find themselves immersed in a process of cultural exchange as they are enlightened firsthand about Vietnamese history, community and culture that are displayed in the production. In addition, the show itself sparks interest from both the local bay area Vietnamese community as well as recognition from around the state. As a result, select performances from the show have been part of other community events such as student cultural and dance showcases.
Ultimately, the show provides a unique performance space for creative expression for Vietnamese Americans. This year the culture show is set to take place on Sunday, April 10th, 2011 at 1pm.

This year, we are celebrating the show with a community dinner in the evening following the production. Our community dinner aims to allow all cast members to celebrate with their families and friends. Culture Show is more than just the show itself, and it doesn’t just end within three mere hours–it is an experience and a celebration of the Vietnamese culture and traditions. We would also like to extend an invitation to all of our attendants and show our appreciation for your support. The best part of culture show is to see this support and to experience that sense of love from families, friends, and the Vietnamese community as a whole.
